| MontereyTurkish Festival Colorful costumes, lively dancing, authentic Mediterranean music and sumptuous foods will be featured August 5th and 6th at the 9th Annual Turkish Arts and Culture Festival in Monterey. The two-day festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at Monterey State Historic Park’s Custom House Plaza, near Monterey’s famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Admission is free. The festival on Monterey Bay, organized by the nonprofit Turkish American Association of California and the Monterey Chapter, will provide fun for the whole family. Folk dancers in the colorful costumes of Turkey will perform to live, authentic music. Belly dancers with sheer veils and finger cymbals will demonstrate the spellbinding techniques that for centuries have been part of the culture in Turkey, an important crossroads between Asia and Europe. There will be art exhibits and displays of the intricately woven Turkish carpets. Gold, silver and beaded jewelry will be on display, as will pottery, country dolls and many other ethnic, traditional arts and crafts. For the children, there will be tents for face painting, story telling, shadow puppets, coloring, a drawing competition, folk line dancing and many more activities. Vendors will provide the delightful foods that offer true tastes of Turkey, including a hamburger-like sandwich seasoned with tasty spices (adana kebap), spicy barbecue (doner kebap), phyllo crust filled with creamy cheese and spinach (borek), bulghur salad (kisir), grape leaves stuffed with rice and mint (dolma) and, of course, traditional Turkish pastries, including baklava, the phyllo pastry made with ground walnuts and honey, which goes perfectly with a cup of strong, thick Turkish coffee. If you drink the coffee, fortune tellers will be on hand to “read” your coffee grounds. The rich and diverse cuisine is an important part of the more than 4,000-year-old culture and spirituality of Turkey and its Anatolian peninsula, the acknowledged “cradle of civilization.” The Turkish Arts and Culture Festival was created to help people understand and enjoy the diverse and fascinating culture that emerged in a country that has long been a melting pot of many civilizations and cultures.
