8th Annual New York Turkish Film Festival! 22 Ekim
This year nineteen films will be presented at a new venue, New York City's
prestigious Village East. This year Istanbul, selected by the European Union as
the European Capital of Culture for the year 2010, weighs in prominently in the
festival. With films such as Istanbul Hatirasi (Crossing the Bridge), Anlat
Istanbul (Istanbul Tales), Politiki Kouzina (Bir Tutam Baharat/A Touch of
Spice), Iki Genç Kiz (Two Girls) and Organize Isler (Organized Jobs), It is
aimed to present the many faces of Istanbul to New York's cosmopolitan
audience, while allowing those of us who know Istanbul well to catch up with the
overwhelming changes this dynamic city has gone through.
The festival opens with Babam ve Oglum (My Father and My Son) directed by
Çagan Irmak, Turkey's young and successful filmmaker. Babam ve Oglum is
Turkey's box office hit of 2005, seen by more than four million theatregoers. So
don't miss it, and don't forget to bring your handkerchiefs!
Festival Commitee presents La Finestra di Fronte (Karsi Pencere/Facing
Windows) by Ferzan Özpetek, one of the most successful directors of the Italian
cinema. This film has won several awards in Italian as well as other international
festivals. The movie also integrates Andrea Guerra's impressive music.
In the "Documentaries" section, you will see Istanbul Hatirasi (Crossing the
Bridge-The Sound of Istanbul) by Fatih Akin, the director of Duvara Karsi
(Head-on), one of the most successful international hits of 2005.

Director award in Tribeca Film Festival this year, documents the story of a group
of Anatolian women trying to put together a theater show in their village.

(The Agha), written by Yavuz Turgul and featuring one of Turkey's greatest
actors, Sener Sen.

movies on Turkey and Turkish culture. This year Festival present A Touch of
Spice by Tasos Baulmetis, a "spicy" and nostalgic movie about the return of
Fanis to Istanbul, the city of his childhood, to discover the city he left behind and
himself.
Mert Baykal's directorial debut Pardon, a part of "Debut Films" series, features
prominent actor Ferhan Sensoy (who also wrote the script) in this tragicomical
farce based on true events.
As a part of "Contemporary Turkish Cinema" section, Erden Kiral's Yolda (On

Akbag and Altan Erkekli.

Magden's book, and Anlat Istanbul (Istanbul Tales) written by Ümit Ünal and
directed in collaboration by five directors (Ümit Ünal, Kudret Sabanci, Selim
Demirdelen, Yücel Yolcu and Ömür Atay) are all excellent examples of
contemporary Turkish cinema.

"Each year we try to produce a better festival than of the previous years. As a
result of this effort and the undeterred belief of our staff and volunteers in
Turkish cinema, our festival has come a long way during the past seven years.
We know we could not have done it without the support of our sponsors,
advertisers, contributors, members and a loyal audience. Your continued support
will enable us to do the many things we still would like to do, and take this festival
to the many places we would like it to go.Thank you for your support of Turkish
cinema Best regards"
